BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Meeting – Tuesday, August 23, 2011
Chair – Marcia Lambert
  Minutes

Present: Marcia Lambert, Sara Fiori, Maryanne Piechocki, Sandra Power,  Ellen Talkowsky,
Judith Wolfe.   Absent: Mary Ellen Halliwell, Bev Moustakis.
Members met at 7:00 P.M.

1.  Walking tour of the Mall. The purpose of the tour was to assess the health and appearance of the walking Mall as it now  exists  and to determine what contribution the Committee could make to its maintenance, preservation and or improvement.  Towards that end, note was taken of the condition of current plantings, the design of planted areas, trees in need of pruning, ownership issues regarding certain decorative fences that surround planted areas, that the project does not include the walkway to Old Town Hall, the time and manpower that would be necessary to manage the area plus the possibility of assistance by the Sheriff’s Department.  Adding the Mall as a Clean Sweeps location and relying on the city of water during the summer was suggested.  It was decided that further study would be needed in order to determine whether the project could be managed by the Committee.

2. Traffic Island and Window Box Contest Report.  Sandi will provide a list of the names of the winners.  She will also draft letters to the editors of various local newspapers identifying and thanking all those individuals and businesses that have supported the traffic island project.  (The list of Traffic Island Contest winners is provided below)

3.  Lady of Salem.  Sam reported on the established Lady of Salem web site.   She noted the subcommittee’s efforts to engage additional sponsors and to developing suitable postcards.  Marcia offered to help with the postcard project.

4.  Halloween.  Ellen led the discussion on the various activities the Committee sponsors during the Halloween celebration.  Included were  the afternoon after school pumpkin decorating activities plus the pumpkin contest and display at the Salem Commons.  Sources for the more than 200 needed pumpkins plus sources for supplies necessary to decorate the pumpkins were discussed.

5.  Other.  General discussion included the planting and management of planters at the entrance to the Salem Ferry , the creation of signs for the Beautification Committee sponsored traffic island  and the Christmas red ribbon wrapping of light poles on the Mall and possible other streets projects.

A Motion to Adjourn was offered, seconded and passed.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40 P.M.
